ÖBB Railway station Gratwein-Gratkorn

A new entrée for commuters

The new railway station with forecourt will create a contemporary and inviting entrance for commuters, travellers and visitors. In addition to the striking wooden canopy, which acts as a central architectural element, the forecourt will be divided into various functional areas. These include a new car park for cars, designated parking spaces for people with disabilities and parking spaces for mopeds.

The outdoor area is designed with green spaces, shrubs and trees, helping to create a pleasant microclimate. These green elements improve the quality of stay and at the same time promote biodiversity in the urban environment. The canopy is the central design and functional element of the forecourt. It covers important areas such as the stairs to the subway, the elevator, the bicycle parking spaces and the sanitary unit near the bus.

The glulam roof construction blends harmoniously into the surroundings and provides adequate protection from the weather. The openings in the canopy allow sufficient daylight to flow in and lend the architecture a lighter appearance.

The load-bearing steel support structure organises the covered area. Another architectural focus is on the sustainable and time-saving construction method of the optimised glulam elements for the roof structure. The wood also helps to reduce CO2 emissions as it acts as a natural CO2 reservoir.

This sustainable construction method is an expression of the project's forward-looking approach. A green noise barrier along the railway track not only serves to reduce noise and protect against train noise, but also integrates aesthetically into the surroundings. It acts as a natural barrier and creates a visual separation from the railway traffic. The interplay of architecture and nature thus becomes an integral part of the new Gratwein-Gratkorn railway station.
